Broadcast Systems
Unfortunately without a universal standard for video signal encoding, different countries around the globe have all adopted one of several different coding standards. This has resulted in the need for converting material, which has been designed for one particular system before it can be used in another.

Our guide to Television Standards

PAL
Phase Alternate Line. The television broadcast standard throughout Europe (except in France and Eastern Europe, where SECAM is the standard). This standard broadcasts 625 lines of resolution, nearly 20% more than the US standard, NTSC, of 525. There are 25 frames (50 fields) per second making up the picture. The 625 lines, 50 field sequence is always linked to 50 Hz mains frequency.

NTSC
National Television System Committee. The organization that developed the analogue television standard currently in uses in the USA, Canada, and Japan. Now generally used to refer to that standard. The NTSC standard combines blue, red and green signals modulated as an AM signal with an FM signal for audio. The picture is made up of 525 lines with 30 frames (60 fields) per second. The 525 lines, 60 field sequence is always linked to 60 Hz mains frequency.

DVD-R
Alligator uses DVD-R for small run DVDs. This format is very like CD R in that the disks can be burnt (made) in a special disk drive rather than pressed in a large factory from a glass master. Like recordable CDs some players cannot play them (in particular some older machines). The newer the design of the player, the better the chance the disk will play. We have checked our disks in a number of new machines and the great majority played. We advise customers to check the intended players can play DVD-Rs before commissioning disks. We are happy to loan test disks for this purpose.
